Atsushi Kaga: I lost you

Atsushi Kaga: I lost you

Tanya Leighton presents I lost you, a solo exhibition by the Tokyo-born, Dublin-based artist Atsushi Kaga at the gallery's space on Kurfürstenstraße 24/25 in Berlin, on view from 16 October to 19 December 2026. The exhibition brings together a new body of work made in 2026 across painting, drawing and sculpture. A group of paintings in acrylic on linen – among them the title work I lost you, Is reincarnation legit? My friend, The elephant mountain and We laughed so much, my friend. Thank you for keeping me company. – unfolds Kaga's gentle, dreamlike world of nocturnal forests, glowing skies and pastel landscapes, inhabited by the recurring anthropomorphic characters that have long populated his work, including the white rabbit often read as the artist's alter ego. These canvases are accompanied by an extensive series of small framed works on paper. Made in pencil, pen, ink, watercolour and coloured pencil, frequently combined with origami paper, translucent paper or inkjet prints, they read like pages from a diary: Shopping bags, Lemon, Hoovering, Juice, New year, Mom, Hello and Goodbye capture fleeting everyday moments, while END and END with a full moon seem to bring the story to a close. Two large bronze sculptures, Cat / Figure 01 and Bunny / Figure 02, translate Kaga's soft, cartoon-like figures into cast metal, their elongated bodies looping and folding back on themselves. Throughout, Kaga's titles speak directly and conversationally – often addressing a friend – lending the exhibition an intimate tone in which humour, tenderness and a quiet sense of loss and longing sit side by side.
