Biography

Atsushi Kaga (born 1978 in Tokyo) is a Japanese artist working across painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and design, based in Dublin. He began his studies at Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1997, received a diploma from Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa in Cork in 2001, and completed a BA in painting at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin in 2005. Shaped by Japanese popular culture – manga, anime and merchandise – and associated with the generation that emerged around the Superflat movement, Kaga creates a self-contained, autobiographical world populated by recurring anthropomorphic animal characters, among them the rabbit Usacchi, regarded as the artist's alter ego. His gently humorous, often melancholic works address themes such as isolation, anxiety, identity, dependency and death, tempering their seriousness with a disarming, childlike tenderness.
