Biography

Jordan Casteel (born 1989 in Denver, Colorado) is an American painter known for large-scale, intimately observed portraits that centre people of colour within the communities she lives in. She studied at Agnes Scott College and received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2014, followed by a residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Working from photographs she takes of her subjects – neighbours in Harlem, students, passengers in her ongoing Subway Series, as well as family and friends – she paints in saturated, expressive colour, and more recently has turned to landscapes and flowers from her home in New York's Hudson Valley. Her first New York museum solo exhibition, Within Reach, was held at the New Museum in 2020, and she was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2021.
