Biography

Jean-Claude Silbermann (born 1935) is a French painter and poet. In the late 1950s he joined the Surrealist group around André Breton, taking part in its exhibitions and publications until the group dissolved in 1969. Since the 1960s he has developed his signature 'enseignes' – paintings on canvas mounted on cut-out wooden panels whose silhouettes break free of the rectangular frame – peopled by figures, animals and objects drawn from a personal mythology of desire, eroticism and dream. Alongside his painting and drawing he has published numerous volumes of poetry and writings.
