Biography
David Salle (born 1952 in Norman, Oklahoma) is an American painter based in New York. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts under John Baldessari and emerged in the early 1980s as a leading figure of the so-called Pictures Generation, known for paintings that layer and juxtapose disparate images drawn from art history, advertising and popular culture. His work was the subject of a survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1987 and has been widely exhibited internationally. He has also designed sets and costumes for the choreographer Karole Armitage, directed the feature film Search and Destroy (1995) and published the essay collection How to See (2016). Since 2022 he has worked with a personalised artificial intelligence model trained primarily on his own work.
