Biography
Alan Charlton (born 1948 in Sheffield, England) is a British conceptual artist who lives and works in London. He studied at Sheffield School of Art, Camberwell School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. Since the mid-1970s he has worked exclusively with the colour grey, summarising his practice in the statement "I am an artist who makes a grey painting". His canvases follow a strict system of measurement in which height, width and depth are multiples of 4.5 cm, and within these fixed parameters he explores endless variations of form and the relationship between painting and architecture. His first solo exhibition at Konrad Fischer Galerie in Düsseldorf and his first institutional solo show at Whitechapel Gallery in London both took place in 1972. He took part in documenta 7 in Kassel (1982), and his work has been shown at institutions including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Kurhaus Kleve, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven. His paintings are held in public collections such as ZKM Karlsruhe, MuHKA in Antwerp, Museu Berardo in Lisbon and the Fonds national d'art contemporain in Paris.
