The Monastery of the Virgin built into the cliffs at Durunka above Asyut

Deir Durunka (Monastery of the Virgin)

A monastery in the cliffs above Asyut around the cave where the Holy Family is said to have sheltered — scene of a vast August pilgrimage.

A cave in the mountain

Deir Durunka, the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, lies in the limestone cliffs of the western desert edge about 8 kilometres south-west of the city of Asyut, above the village of Durunka. According to Coptic tradition, it marks one of the last stations of the Holy Family's journey in Egypt: a cave in the mountain where they sheltered before returning north. The cave, originally an ancient quarry or tomb, was later transformed into a church.

The monastery

Around the cave church, a large monastery complex has grown, built into and along the face of the cliff, with churches, accommodation for pilgrims and monks' quarters. From its terraces, the view stretches over the Nile valley and the city of Asyut. The surrounding cliffs also contain ancient tombs and quarries.

The August pilgrimage

Deir Durunka is the scene of one of the largest religious gatherings in Egypt. During the Fast of the Virgin, in the first half of August, hundreds of thousands — some estimates say more than a million — of Coptic Christians, and many Muslims, come to the monastery for two weeks of prayer, processions and celebrations, culminating in the feast of the Assumption on 22 August in the Coptic calendar.

Exhibo editorial

Most of the year Durunka is a quiet monastery clinging to a desert cliff, with a cave church at its heart and a view over the green valley of Asyut. In August it becomes something else entirely: a city of pilgrims, tents, music and candles, one of the greatest religious festivals in the Middle East.

Come at either time for very different experiences: in peace, to sit in the cave where tradition says the Holy Family rested, or in the festival, to feel the extraordinary devotion of Egypt's Copts.

How to find it

Deir Durunka lies in the cliffs above the village of Durunka, about 8 km south-west of Asyut city, reached by car or taxi. The road climbs to the monastery at the foot of the cliff; the cave church is at the heart of the complex.
