Aswan International Sculpture Symposium Open-Air Museum

Monumental granite sculptures by artists from around the world, carved each winter in Aswan since 1996 and set on a desert plateau.

Granite meets contemporary art

The Aswan International Sculpture Symposium was founded in 1996 by the Egyptian sculptor Adam Henein, one of the leading figures of modern Egyptian art, who also led the restoration of the Great Sphinx. Each winter, sculptors from Egypt and around the world are invited to Aswan to carve monumental works in local granite, the same stone ancient Egyptians quarried for their obelisks and colossi, working outdoors over several weeks with local stonemasons. The symposium has become one of the most important events of contemporary sculpture in the Arab world and Africa.

The open-air museum

The works created at the symposium are placed in an open-air museum on a rocky desert plateau above Aswan, near the ancient granite quarries, forming a growing sculpture park of abstract and figurative pieces that respond to the stone, the light and the landscape. Wandering among them, visitors can see the dialogue between modern artists and a material shaped by Egyptian sculptors for five thousand years, with views over the city and the Nile.

Visiting

The sculpture park is less visited than Aswan's ancient sites, and access arrangements can change; it is best to check locally or with a guide before going. During the symposium itself, visitors can sometimes watch the sculptors at work. Adam Henein's own works can be seen at the Adam Henein Museum in Harrania, near Giza.

Exhibo editorial

Imagine a desert plateau where giant blocks of pink and grey granite have been turned into spirals, faces, birds, abstract towers — dozens of them, each made in a single winter by a different artist from a different country, all from the stone that gave Egypt its obelisks. That is the symposium's open-air museum, and very few people know it exists.

It's the best place in Egypt to see contemporary sculpture in conversation with the ancient landscape. Go late in the afternoon when the granite glows, wander slowly, and if you're in Aswan in winter, ask whether the symposium is in session: watching the stone being carved is unforgettable.
