The museum’s mission is to contribute to the creation of new culture based on mutual understanding and coexistence through art. Its programme focuses on introducing contemporary art across disciplines including design, fashion, architecture, and manga/anime, while providing platforms for public exhibitions and international cultural exchange.

The National Art Center, Tokyo is a national museum operated by the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art, having opened in 2007 as its fifth facility. Located in Roppongi, it features Japan's largest exhibition space at 14,000 square meters and operates without a permanent collection to focus on hosting diverse temporary exhibitions. The institution functions as an art center where people can experience various artistic expressions, learn, and recognize diverse values.
