Sohag National Museum
Archaeology and heritage of Sohag Governorate from prehistory to the Islamic era
About
The museum presents the history, beliefs and crafts of Sohag Governorate across five thousand years.
The Sohag National Museum was inaugurated in August 2018 after a construction process that began in 1989. Set on the east bank of the Nile in Sohag and designed after the temple of Seti I at Abydos, the 8,500-square-metre building has a basement and two floors, six exhibition halls and a boat landing. Its collection of more than 900 objects spans the Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods, with finds from Abydos, Umm el-Qa'ab and Akhmim — including a pink granite statue of Ramesses II, the statue of Nakht, governor of Akhmim, the key of the White Monastery and an Ottoman gilded Qur'an — and a section on Akhmim's textile and handicraft traditions.
Why this museum matters
Exhibo editorial
On the east bank of the Nile in Sohag, with its own landing for boats and four lion-headed Sekhmets at the door — a building modelled on the temple of Seti I at Abydos, an hour south. The foundation stone was laid in 1989; it opened in 2018. What it holds is the province itself: a pink granite Ramesses II, the Old Kingdom governor Nakht of Akhmim, finds from Abydos and Umm el-Qa'ab, the key of the White Monastery, a gilded Ottoman Qur'an, and the textiles Akhmim has woven since antiquity. A regional museum in the full sense — it explains the country you are driving through.
