Landscape of the Mind II belongs to Manal AlDowayan’s series Landscapes of the Mind (2009–2010), archival giclée prints on Hahnemühle paper overlaid with silkscreen ink. Playing with the genre of landscape, AlDowayan covers photographs of Saudi mountains, roads, buildings and structures with dense fields of symbols that obscure the visible scene, questioning how Saudi Arabia — and Saudi women in particular — are represented and imagined from outside. The series proposes that reality and geography can be reinvented and repackaged in the mind without being physically altered, resonating with the exhibition’s idea of affective, subjective cartography.
