Mungo Thomson: Monument
Lafayette Anticipations presents Monument, a solo exhibition devoted to the Californian artist Mungo Thomson. Through two emblematic works, Thomson inscribes ephemeral images and objects destined to be thrown away into the long-term structures of time. Working across video, sculpture and installation, he explores popular culture and shifts our perspective on the familiar until it suddenly seems strange. Erected in the courtyard of Lafayette Anticipations, Snowman is a monumental tower inspired by cardboard shipping and postal tubes. Packaging made to circulate and then disappear is transformed here into a slender bronze sculpture built to last. The film Time Life Volume 15. Monument to a Period of Time in Which I Lived is the fifteenth instalment in a series of stop-motion animations, each composed of thousands of images photographed from books. A procession of candles flickers past like a sequence of snapshots, drawn in particular from religious texts, art history books and interior design publications. With Snowman and Time Life Volume 15, Thomson subverts the very idea of the monument. Inspired by the vast circulation of parcels and images in our time, these monuments commemorate not historical events but the everyday experience of a generation – the artist’s own – shaped by print media and by the transition from the analogue to the digital world. Thomson’s practice spans film, sound, sculpture, photography and installation, and is known for its engagement with cultural signs and analogue materials, which he repurposes into immersive optical and kinetic experiences. Recent solo exhibitions include the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, the Aspen Art Museum and Karma, New York. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2025 and his work was featured in the 2025 New York Film Festival.
