The Gallery’s objectives are to care for, enhance, and study its collection, reflecting how artists and societies have responded to myth, religion, history, and contemporary events over seven hundred years. It aims to complete this historical narrative by integrating modern and contemporary works, thereby providing visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the development of painting in the Western tradition under one roof.
The National Gallery is a public museum located at Trafalgar Square in London, housing one of the world's finest collections of Western painting from the 13th to the early 20th centuries. Established in 1824, it operates as an independent charity funded by donations and grants, offering free admission to its permanent collection while charging for special exhibitions. The institution is currently undertaking Project Domani, a £750 million transformation that includes a new wing designed by Kengo Kuma to expand the collection into 20th- and 21st-century paintings.
