Kharga

Archaeology of the Kharga and Dakhla oases and the Western Desert

About

The museum tells the story of Egypt's Western Desert oases through the objects found in them.

The New Valley Museum in Kharga gathers finds from the Kharga and Dakhla oases and the Western Desert, from prehistory to the Islamic period. The ground floor presents prehistoric tools, beads, shells and ostrich eggs, Old Kingdom false-door stelae, funerary objects, Greco-Roman gilded mummy masks, Roman glass, ceramics and coins, and the Kellis codices — wooden tablet notebooks inscribed in Greek and Coptic. The upper floor is devoted to Christianity and Islam in the oases, with icons, manuscripts, jewellery and textiles.

Why this museum matters

Exhibo editorial

Kharga, the capital of Egypt's largest and emptiest governorate — and in it the only museum that holds the Western Desert together. Prehistoric tools, beads and ostrich eggshell from the open desert; false-door stelae of the Old Kingdom governors of Dakhla; Roman glass; gilded mummy masks; Coptic icons and textiles from the churches of the oases. The rarest things are three wooden notebooks from Kellis in Dakhla, written in Greek and Coptic — accounts and payments from a late Roman village. Bagawat and Hibis are outside the door. This is where their story is told in one room.
