Hurghada Museum
Survey of Egyptian civilisation from the Pharaonic to the modern era
About
The museum offers visitors to the Red Sea a compact introduction to the whole span of Egyptian history and art.
Opened in 2020, the Hurghada Museum is the first state archaeological museum on Egypt's Red Sea coast. Developed by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in partnership with the private sector, it presents objects drawn from Egypt's national collections in a chronological survey from the Pharaonic period through the Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras to the Mohammed Ali dynasty, with themes including daily life, beauty and adornment, and religion. Its long evening opening hours are designed for the city's visitors.
Why this museum matters
Exhibo editorial
A resort town built on diving and all-inclusive hotels, and since 2020 a state museum on its main road — the first on the Red Sea coast. It holds no single local hoard; instead it is a survey drawn from the national collections: Pharaonic statues and coffins, Coptic textiles and icons, Islamic metalwork and ceramics, royal objects of the Mohammed Ali dynasty. For a visitor who will never reach Cairo, it is Egypt in two hours. For anyone who has, it is still a surprise to find this much history in a beach town at eleven at night — the museum keeps evening hours made for a town that sleeps late.
