About
The Fayoum Art Center connects artists with each other and with the community, locally, regionally and internationally, through residencies, workshops and the Caricature Museum's collection of Egyptian and Arab satire.
Founded in 2006 by the Egyptian painter Mohamed Abla, the Fayoum Art Center in Tunis Village is a meeting place for artists, with studios, residencies (Art Inn), workshops for all ages and guest accommodation. In 2009 Abla opened within it the first caricature museum in the Middle East, holding more than 500 caricatures by Egyptian and Arab artists — including Saroukhan and George Bahgoury — from the early twentieth century to today, alongside an archive of satirical press. The center hosts CaricaTunis, an international competition for caricature and satirical portraiture; the museum building has been registered by Fayoum Governorate as architecturally distinctive.
Why this museum matters
Exhibo editorial
Tunis Village, on the ridge above Lake Qarun — a mud-brick compound under the largest clay dome in the village. The painter Mohamed Abla founded the Fayoum Art Center here in 2006 on a simple conviction: artists should live among communities, not hide in studios. In 2009 he added something no one in the region had built — a museum of caricature. More than 500 drawings, some over a hundred years old: Saroukhan, George Bahgoury, unflattering presidents, the British occupation, Palestine. It is Egypt's modern history told from the street, in ink. Around it, a residency, workshops for children, the CaricaTunis competition, rooms to stay the night. In a village known for pottery, the sharpest objects are on paper.
