About
The museum presents the traditional life of Farafra oasis through the work of one of its own artists.
The Badr Museum in Qasr al-Farafra is the house, studio and museum of the self-taught Farafra artist Badr Abdel Moghny, born in 1958. Built by the artist in painted mud brick and opened as a museum in 1990, it displays his sculptures in clay, sand and local sandstone and his paintings depicting the crafts, customs and daily life of the oasis, made with natural materials and binding techniques he developed himself, alongside a collection of local objects and a shop.
Why this museum matters
Exhibo editorial
Qasr al-Farafra, the old mud village of the remotest oasis on the White Desert road. Badr Abdel Moghny, born into a Bedouin family in 1958 and entirely self-taught, built his own house here out of painted mud brick and in 1990 opened it as a museum. Inside are his figures of clay and sand and local sandstone — women baking, men at the well, weddings, harvests — and paintings of the oasis made with pigments and binders he invented to survive the desert. It is outsider art in the exact sense: made far from any art school, for the people it depicts. And often the artist is there to explain it himself.
