El Alamein

The 1942 Battle of El Alamein and the North African campaign of the Second World War

About

The museum documents the Battle of El Alamein through the weapons, equipment and stories of all the forces that fought in it.

The El Alamein Military Museum was established by order of President Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1956 to commemorate the Battle of El Alamein of 1942 and Egypt's role in the North African campaign. Run by the Egyptian Armed Forces, it was renovated for the battle's 50th anniversary in October 1992 and reopened with a new display in October 2014. It comprises an open-air display of tanks, artillery and vehicles, permanent halls — a joint hall and national halls for Egypt, Britain, Germany and Italy — with weapons, uniforms, models, battle maps and commanders' belongings, and a temporary exhibition hall. The Commonwealth, German and Italian war memorials lie nearby.

Why this museum matters

Exhibo editorial

The coast road west of Alexandria, past the resorts of Marina, at the place where the war in North Africa turned. In October and November 1942 the British Eighth Army stopped Rommel's advance here, and in 1956 Nasser ordered a museum to remember it. It is laid out like a treaty: a joint hall, then one hall each for Egypt, Britain and the Commonwealth, Germany and Italy — uniforms, weapons, maps, the personal things of commanders — and outside, a garden of tanks and guns from both sides. Then drive a few minutes to the cemeteries: the Commonwealth, German and Italian memorials, three very different architectures of grief on the same stretch of desert.
