About
Tashkeel aims to further practitioner development, public engagement, and lifelong learning through an annual programme of training, residencies, talks, exhibitions, and international collaborations. It seeks to empower the country’s growing creative and cultural industries by nurturing contemporary art and design while embedding UAE-made art and design into society and the economy.
Tashkeel was established in Dubai in 2008 by Lateefa bint Maktoum to support the growth of contemporary art and design practice rooted in the UAE. The Alserkal location — a Makerspace in Unit 89 — runs studios, workshops, exhibitions and residencies alongside the main Nad Al Sheba campus. Open to members and the public on an open membership model.

Tashkeel is where Dubai's artists actually work. Not where they show — where they make things. Founded in 2008 by Lateefa bint Maktoum, it was built on a straightforward premise: the UAE needed infrastructure for artistic practice, not just for display. Eighteen years later that infrastructure includes printmaking studios, a darkroom, textile printing, 3D and digital facilities, a library, a design development programme that has launched some of the most recognised names in Emirati design, and a residency programme with international exchanges from Dundee to Beirut. The Alserkal Avenue Makerspace is the public-facing entry point — smaller and more accessible than the main Nad Al Sheba campus, embedded in the same avenue as twenty-plus galleries. You can walk in during a studio open day and end up in a conversation with an artist mid-process. That is rarer than it sounds in Dubai, and worth seeking out.
