A poet's house kept as a poet's house: nabati and fasih verse, letters, a majlis, and the plaster and wood he asked the Al Ahsa craftsmen to make.
The Museum of the Poet Al Oqaili occupies the 1923 house of Mubarak bin Hamad Al Oqaili, on the edge of the Spice Souk in Al Ras, Deira. Builders from Al Ahsa raised a two-storey courtyard house of coral, stone, plaster, teak, sandalwood, palm and sarooj, with carved ornament and inscriptions. The poet, known for both fasih and nabati verse, lived in Dubai until 1954. Nine rooms follow his life, his poetry, correspondence, manuscripts, majlis and the restoration of the house, with original poems in his hand, personal belongings and furniture from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dubai Culture runs the 187-square-metre museum.
