Exhibitions, performance and public programmes on AUC's historic downtown campus

About

The Tahrir Cultural Center opens AUC's historic downtown campus to the public as a hub for the arts, ideas and community in the heart of Cairo.

The Tahrir Cultural Center occupies the American University in Cairo's historic Tahrir Square campus, developed around the Khairy Pasha Palace. Owned, operated and programmed by AUC, it opened its first phase with six renovated galleries — including the Margo Veillon Gallery of Modern Egyptian Art, the Legacy, Future, Ewart and Falaki galleries — the restored Ewart Memorial Hall (1928), the Oriental Hall, the Falaki Mainstage Theater, gardens for outdoor events, workshop spaces and a café. It hosts exhibitions, concerts, theatre, talks, festivals for children and the annual Tahrir CultureFest.

Why this museum matters

Exhibo editorial

The American University in Cairo's old campus on Tahrir Square, around the nineteenth-century Khairy Pasha palace — the walls on Mohamed Mahmoud Street still carry traces of the revolution's graffiti. When the university moved to New Cairo, it kept this campus and turned it into a public cultural centre: six galleries, among them the Margo Veillon Gallery of Modern Egyptian Art; Ewart Memorial Hall, the 1928 auditorium where Umm Kulthum once sang; the Oriental Hall; the Falaki Theater. Every spring the Tahrir CultureFest fills the gardens, and in 2026 its exhibitions turned to art and artificial intelligence. A campus in the middle of the square that changed the country, now open to anyone who walks in.
