About

Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) is Germany’s national centre for the presentation and discussion of international contemporary arts, with a particular focus on non-European cultures and societies. It is housed in the former Congress Hall in the Tiergarten, designed by Hugh Stubbins and opened in 1957 as the American contribution to the Interbau exhibition, and nicknamed the “pregnant oyster” for its curved roof. Since 1989 HKW has presented exhibitions, concerts, performances, film and discourse programmes; it is funded by the German federal government.
