Ala Younis: Huge Likeness

Save show

This solo exhibition by Ala Younis brings together works from her research-led practice, some of which emerged through direct or tangential engagement with the libraries and archives of the American University of Beirut. Younis typically begins with a fragment: a building, an image, an anecdote, a publication. She then follows it into layered narratives of modernity, politics and cultural imagination in the Arab region, tracing how architecture, publishing and personal testimony shape memory and our present understanding. Architecture runs through the exhibition as both subject and method. It includes Plan for Greater Baghdad (2015), which draws on Rifat Chadirji's photographic collection once held in Beirut, alongside newer works that revisit the artist's own architectural training, where drawing tools, prototypes and the passage from hand to machine become the material of her thinking. The exhibition is organised by AUB Art Galleries and Collections at the Rose and Shaheen Saleeby Museum.
