Bahariya Antiquities Museum (Golden Mummies)
Greco-Roman gilded mummies and Late Period tombs of Bahariya
About
The museum presents the funerary art of Bahariya's Greco-Roman inhabitants, revealed by one of the largest cemeteries discovered in Egypt in recent decades.
The antiquities museum in Bawiti displays a selection of Greco-Roman mummies from the Valley of the Golden Mummies, a vast necropolis near the town discovered in 1996 and excavated from 1999. The mummies, with gilded masks and painted cartonnage, show the funerary art of the oasis's elite in the Roman period. The Bahariya antiquities ticket also gives access to other monuments of the oasis, including the painted 26th-dynasty tombs of Bannentiu and Zed-Amun-ef-ankh.
Why this museum matters
Exhibo editorial
Bawiti, the main town of the Bahariya oasis, the last stop before the White Desert. In 1996 a donkey stumbled into a hole a few kilometres away and revealed a Greco-Roman cemetery so large it was named the Valley of the Golden Mummies. A small hall here shows some of them: mummies of the Roman period with gilded masks and painted cartonnage, faces of the oasis's wealthy two thousand years ago. The same ticket opens the painted Late Period tombs of Bannentiu and Zed-Amun-ef-ankh nearby. A brief stop, often skipped by safari groups in a hurry. It shouldn't be.
