Living Legacies

Protecting Heritage. Building Hope

Save show

Organised by Louvre Abu Dhabi and ALIPH, the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage, Living Legacies. Protecting Heritage. Building Hope tells the stories of the people who work to protect, restore and safeguard cultural heritage in some of the world’s most complex environments — places affected by conflict, crisis and environmental threat. Rather than presenting heritage as something fixed in the past, the exhibition shows it as a living resource that communities draw upon to preserve identity, memory and tradition, and to rebuild hope for the future. Artefacts lent by international cultural institutions and by ALIPH’s grantee partners — projects supported by the alliance around the world — are shown alongside the human stories behind their preservation. Visitors are guided through a multi-sensory, immersive experience in which objects are accompanied by projections and first-hand testimonies from conservators, archaeologists, craftspeople and local communities, revealing the care, skill and courage involved in saving monuments, collections and intangible traditions. Among the works on view is Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté’s monumental textile Tuareg Pattern on a Blue Background from the Sahel and the Sahara (2024), recently acquired by Louvre Abu Dhabi. The exhibition is curated by Magdalena Ruiz, Senior Curator at Louvre Abu Dhabi, with Dr Sandra Bialystok and Dr Bastien Varoutsikos of the ALIPH Foundation, assisted by Amaryllis Maria Georges, Senior Curatorial Assistant at Louvre Abu Dhabi. It is accompanied by curator talks, a symposium, film screenings, performances and learning programmes for families and adults.
