Made in Germany around 1535, the so-called “De Bure” gilded globe is among the earliest surviving terrestrial globes to record the new geographical knowledge gained from Portuguese and Spanish voyages, including the sea route around Africa into the Indian Ocean. Its engraved gilded sphere maps continents, seas and trading coasts as they were understood in the early 16th century. On loan from the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
