Unforeseen Encounters - Yang Maoyuan
‘East meets east’, Yang Maoyuan’s first major Singapore presentation
Taking its title from the Guliang Commentary, “A meeting without prior arrangement is called an encounter,” Unforeseen Encounters captures Yang Maoyuan’s open ended approach to art and life. Rather than following a fixed path, Yang allows travel, observation, memory and chance encounters to shape his work. Together, these works reflect Yang’s fascination with how experience becomes memory, and how memory can be transformed into form. A pioneering figure in Chinese contemporary art, Yang represented China at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, the National Museum in Warsaw and Today Art Museum in Beijing. His works are held in major public collections including M+, Hong Kong; White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney; and CAFA Art Museum, Beijing.
