Opening: Jordan Casteel – Winter Sun

Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Marais opens Winter Sun, an exhibition of new paintings by American artist Jordan Casteel, on Monday, 19 October from 6 to 8 pm. It is her first exhibition in France and the most significant presentation of her work in Europe to date. Painted in the first half of 2026 in a cool, earthy palette inspired by midwinter light, the works reflect on dormancy and renewal, hope and grief, love and loss. Figurative portraits, landscapes and botanical paintings extend Casteel’s ongoing attention to kinship, place and transition. Her sitters – family, friends and strangers met in the spaces she moves through – often foreground people of colour, mapping and honouring the social landscape around her. Among the works is before your time (2026), from her celebrated Subway Series, in which a family forms a single unit beneath a stark subway safety notice. The exhibition runs until 23 December 2026.
