Potential Closure for Redevelopment
National Museum Cardiff, Wales's principal cultural institution, may face temporary closure to accommodate significant redevelopment works, according to recent statements from Amgueddfa Cymru, the organisation that manages the city-centre site. The museum, which houses Wales's national art and heritage collections, is one of seven venues operated by the group. Officials confirmed that any decision regarding closure would follow a full review and consultation process, citing the need to preserve the building ahead of its centenary in 2027.
Design Team Appointed
Amgueddfa Cymru has appointed AHR and C.F. Møller Architects to lead enabling works for maintenance and potential future redevelopment. The organisation stated this would position the museum to advance with broader improvements, should they be approved. These preparatory measures aim to address structural and operational challenges while ensuring the building remains fit for purpose for future generations.
Staff and Collection Concerns
The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) has raised concerns about the impact on staff and the protection of collections during any potential closure. Discussions are ongoing, though PCS noted it would be premature to speculate on the duration of any shutdown or its implications for employees. The union has been contacted for further comment.
Funding and Political Context
The museum has faced financial pressures in recent years. In 2024, chief executive Jane Richardson warned that the deteriorating building, including issues with water ingress and electrical systems, could force closure without additional funding. While then-culture secretary Lesley Griffiths pledged support, the Welsh Government has allocated £30.5m in grant-in-aid for 2024–25, supplemented by a £940,000 boost in September 2024 and £3m for urgent works announced in May 2024. The recent Senedd election victory by Plaid Cymru, which campaigned on increased cultural investment, may influence future funding decisions.

A mechanical issue in February 2025 led to a brief closure, highlighting the museum's ongoing operational vulnerabilities. As the institution approaches its centenary, the balance between preserving its historic fabric and modernising its facilities remains a pressing concern.
