S.M.A.K. director to lead 7th edition in Timișoara, forging new institutional partnership
A New Chapter for Art Encounters
The Art Encounters Foundation in Timișoara has announced that Philippe Van Cauteren, artistic director of the S.M.A.K. museum in Ghent, Belgium, will curate the 7th Art Encounters Biennial in 2027. The event runs from 21 May to 4 July 2027, with a three-day opening programme scheduled for 21–23 May. The appointment signals the start of a strategic partnership between the foundation and S.M.A.K., aimed at fostering artistic co-production and professional exchange.
Curatorial Vision and Collaboration
Van Cauteren's approach centres on dialogue with artists and critical inquiry into the museum and biennial's roles in contemporary society. He described the opportunity as "a chance to learn, discover, and share both the local identity of Timișoara and the constellation of relations the process creates." The collaboration with S.M.A.K. is intended to establish a sustainable model for presenting contemporary art, blending institutional expertise with the biennial's experimental ethos.
Van Cauteren's Track Record
With over 15 years leading S.M.A.K., Van Cauteren has positioned the museum as a hub for international contemporary art. His curatorial work spans exhibitions in Brazil, Chile, Iraq, Turkey, Nepal, and Belgium. Notable projects include the Belgian Pavilion (2013) and Iraq Pavilion (2015) at the Venice Biennale, as well as the first Kathmandu Triennial (2017). His book Letters to Artists compiles correspondence with creators over the past decade and a half.
Institutional Alignment
Diana Marincu, artistic director of the Art Encounters Foundation, emphasised that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to co-production and professional development. She noted that Van Cauteren's approach aligns with the biennial's mission to highlight art's role in personal and collective growth. The 2027 edition is funded by the City of Timișoara through its Centre for Projects and will be organised in collaboration with S.M.A.K.
