Biography
Yu Nishimura (born 1982) is a Japanese painter. Working in oil and tempera, he builds his images from superimposed, slightly offset layers of outline and colour, producing blurred, dreamlike portraits, landscapes and urban scenes that draw on everyday sources such as street photography, anime and the landscapes and built environments of Japan. His understanding of the 'portrait' extends beyond the human figure to animals, cars and elements of landscape. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at venues including Lafayette Anticipations and Crèvecœur in Paris, David Zwirner in New York, Sadie Coles HQ in London, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan.
