Biography
Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) was an American artist and a leading figure of Pop Art. Born in New York, he rose to prominence in the early 1960s with large paintings based on comic strips and advertisements, rendered with bold black outlines, flat primary colors, and Ben-Day dots that mimic commercial printing. Over a career spanning more than three decades he extended this vocabulary to art history, interiors, landscapes, sculpture, and murals, and his investigation of mass-produced imagery has influenced generations of artists. He lived and worked mainly in New York and Southampton.
