Biography
Robert Indiana (1928–2018), born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, was an American artist closely associated with Pop art and hard-edge painting. After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Edinburgh College of Art, he settled in New York in 1954, where his studio at Coenties Slip in Lower Manhattan placed him among a circle of artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin and Jack Youngerman. Working with stencilled words, numbers and bold geometric forms, he made paintings and assemblage sculptures from salvaged wood and metal found around the waterfront. His LOVE image, first conceived in the mid-1960s, became one of the most widely reproduced artworks of the twentieth century and was translated into monumental sculptures around the world. In 1978 he moved to the island of Vinalhaven, Maine, where he lived and worked until his death.
