Biography
Lovis Corinth (1858–1925) was a German artist and writer whose mature work as a painter and printmaker realised a synthesis of Impressionism and Expressionism. Born in Tapiau in the Province of Prussia, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, then moved to Berlin, where in 1902 he opened a painting school for women. He joined the Berlin Secession and served as its president from 1915 to 1925, succeeding Max Liebermann. His early work was naturalistic, but after a stroke in 1911 his style loosened and took on expressionistic qualities, with more vibrant colour in portraits, landscapes, nudes and biblical scenes.
