Biography

Josef Kaiser (1910–1991) was a German architect, urban planner, university teacher and tenor, born in Celje. He studied architecture in Prague from 1929 to 1935. His designs decisively shaped the architecture of East Berlin in the 1960s, and with more than 400 projects he was among the busiest architects in the GDR. The buildings realised in the second construction phase of the Karl-Marx-Allee, including the Kino International, are counted among the most important examples of postwar modernism. He died in Altenberg in the Ore Mountains in 1991.
