Biography
Fiona Banner (born 1966 in Merseyside, England), also known as The Vanity Press, is a British artist whose work spans sculpture, drawing, installation, film and text. Her practice demonstrates a long-standing fascination with fighter aircraft and their place in culture, particularly as presented on film. She first became known for her 'wordscapes' – written, frame-by-frame transcriptions of Hollywood war films such as Top Gun and Apocalypse Now. In 2009 she issued herself an ISBN and registered herself as a publication, The Vanity Press. Banner was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2002, and in 2010 installed two decommissioned fighter jets, Harrier and Jaguar, in the Duveen Galleries of Tate Britain. Her work has been shown at venues including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Hayward Gallery, London. In 2020 she was appointed Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts.
