Biography

Brice Marden (1938–2023) was an American painter generally described as a Minimalist, although his work has roots in Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, and lyrical abstraction. Emerging in New York in the mid-1960s, he became known for monochrome and multi-panel paintings made with oil paint mixed with beeswax and turpentine and applied in many layers. From the mid-1980s he developed the calligraphic, interlacing line paintings inspired in part by Chinese poetry and calligraphy. Marden lived and worked in New York City; Tivoli, New York; Hydra, Greece; and Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania. His work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2006.
