Curatorial Ethos

-

Killa Design is a Dubai architecture studio founded by Shaun Killa in 2015. The firm works across mixed-use, high-rise, hospitality, office and residential projects, with further experience in retail, theatre, museum, urban design and master planning, and offers architecture, master planning, engineering, project management, site supervision and interior design in-house. Its design philosophy centres on working from first principles — treating each project as a unique problem rather than repeating established forms — and on environmental performance, using parametric and computational tools alongside passive design and integrated renewables. Its portfolio includes the Museum of the Future, the Office of the Future, Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, the Address Beach Resort, the BAPS Hindu Mandir and the Bahrain World Trade Centre, the last among the first towers in the world to integrate large-scale wind turbines into its structure.

Why this gallery matters

Exhibo editorial

In 2016 Killa Design delivered the Office of the Future — the world's first fully functional, permanently occupied 3D-printed building, extruded in concrete by a printer six metres tall and now home to the Dubai Future Foundation. It's a useful way to understand the studio: drawn to the technical edge, willing to build the thing that hasn't been built before, and consistently working where architecture meets culture and civic life. That cultural strand runs deep through the portfolio, much of it still at concept stage — an opera house conceived as a multi-cluster cultural masterplan reaching across different audiences, a science museum for Abu Dhabi built around exhibition galleries and an innovation incubator, a private gallery shaped by contemporary Islamic motifs. The studio moves fluidly between these civic commissions and the commercial towers and resorts that fund a practice at this scale, but its identity is anchored in the cultural work. For Dubai and the wider Gulf, Killa Design is one of the home-grown studios defining what the region's landmark cultural architecture looks like — designed and engineered from inside the city it's reshaping.
